A new home in the Gamma Quadrant – Shuttle Trip
by
Mr. John Been, lord and master of the King George's refit team, even if he didn't seem to know it, stopped at the XO's office and tapped the chime.
A voice responded from within and the door opened.
John smiled kindly at Lt. Devok as he stepped through the door. He noticed that she was doing paperwork and he felt a certain sympathy for her. There was always too much paperwork on government jobs.
"Lieutenant," he said, "I wonder if I might get you to do me a favor..." He let the sentence trail off then looked hopeful at Devok.
"If it is within my power to do so, of course." She replied coolly.
And added in the back of her mind that if it doesn't involve paperwork, she would put him in for a raise, a promotion, and maybe offer to have his children, too! Naturally, it wouldn't do to say out loud. She was the XO, and discipline must be maintained, professional standards upheld. Plus, if he was used to her Vulcan, logical efficiency, she could more than likely shock him quite neatly in the future when her other side reared it's head. It's always good to get the most bang for your buck. What bangs had to do with male earth herbivores she didn't know, but the earthers used to say it, and it fit the situation quite neatly so often.
As the man stood waiting for a reply, Devok realized Mr. Been had been speaking. And furthermore, while a part of her heard every word, she didn't really have the faintest idea of what he was saying. She chided herself that she must remember that Mr. Been is a man of few words. LISTEN to them, don't assume you'll pick it up as he continues to speak. He won't.
Standing up, she mentally shook off her tangential flights of fancy. "Mr. Been, it appears I may have I surpassed my limit on the amount of time I can study supply requisitions against inventory lists along with projected consumption statistics, and still maintain my grasp of basic interpersonal communication. Perhaps you would consider joining me for a cup of coffee in the ship's lounge, and we could go over your request again?"
"Vulcans drink coffee?" he said, his bushy eyebrows crawling up his forehead.
"They do if they spent 4 years of flight school trying to best the cadet shuttle speed record by practicing sims late into the night when everyone else was asleep." she replied. "Now I find I have developed quite a taste for the stuff."
He smiled at her and replied "I think I can spare the time for a cup." He had quite a lot of work to do but sometimes people were more important. A short lift trip took them to deck 2.
"I believe your junior officers have taken to calling this place 'The Pub'. I must admit it does rather remind me of a small pub I once stopped in while visiting Wales." he said as they walked into the officer's wardroom.
After they had relaxed and sipped their coffee for a few minutes, John decided to broach the subject of business again. "The favor I wanted to ask you, Lieutenant, is regarding the materials we've been waiting for to recondition the warp core." He paused and sipped his coffee. "Apparently there was some sort of miscommunication and they were delivered to the New Bajor colony instead.
I have spoken to the people at New Bajor and they're willing to put the materials on the next transport headed for Starbase Gamma, but it would be at least a week before it got here. On the other hand, we do have the ship's runabout completely ready for service and it is just large enough to carry the vital portion of that shipment..." John's voice trailed off once again as he waited for Devok's response.
Devok's cool, tempered demeanor stood her in good stead as she let his words sink in. Sink aaaaaaall the way in. To Bajor and back was two days at top speed. Two days flying. Two days flying!
Her mind snapped back to the pertinent issue. "Well done tracking the parts, Mr. Been. I recall noting that the parts had not been accounted for, but it would have been approximately 1.26 days before inventory cross-checking would have been complete and action taken to obtain them. " she replied. "As the warp core is clearly of the highest priority, it looks to me as if we have ourselves..." Her eyes widened as she started to grin "... a ROAD TRIP!"
John's heart almost jumped when the vulcan started to grin but then he smiled back at her and said "I'll leave it to you then."
